Characteristics of Position:

This is a graduate or undergraduate student practicum, internship, or field placement in a clinical position in a human services agency providing alcohol, drug abuse, mental health or juvenile justice services.  Counselor Interns provide assessment for mental health and substance use issues, basic integrated and supportive individual, family and group counseling, education, advocacy, linkage, coordination, problem-solving and monitoring to optimize the functioning of individuals with substance disorders or co-occurring substance and mental disorders, working under supervision of the assigned field instructor or designee.

Pre-requisite Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program in social work, counseling, psychology or other human services field and working under a formal learning contract or similar agreement with a university.

Quantity of Work Expected:    Commensurate with level necessary to fully meet obligations of learning contract or similar document,

Supervision:     Work is performed under the direction of the assigned field instructor. This position does not provide supervision to others.

Scope of Responsibility:  Under supervision of the assigned field instructor or designee, conducts interviews to assess social, legal, medical psychological and educational needs of client; provides individual, group, or family counseling; provides casework services to assist clients in obtaining social, educational and vocational goals. Engages clients to talk and communicates empathically about their addiction or mental illness, medications and recovery.

Core Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Working under supervision of the assigned field instructor or designee, interns:

  • Complete admission and orientation documentation; may administer or interpret screening/assessment instruments.

  • Develop treatment or service plans, which include services to accomplish.

  • Provide individual, group, and/or family counseling

  • Make referrals to community resources, including social, legal and educational providers.

  • Attend scheduled interdisciplinary treatment team meeting or clinical supervisory sessions and discusses aspects of client's care and progress (or lack of same); may participate in other meetings/events as assigned.

  • Report crisis situations and treatment needs of clients to clinical personnel and supervisor; recognize client's comprehensive needs and discusses with interdisciplinary treatment team.
