The Peer Support Specialist works in a Community Based Program of a human services agency, providing diversion opportunities in coordination with Hillsborough County Early Jail Diversion as an alternative to incarceration.  Duties include spending a majority of time providing peer support services to targeted Mental Health and/or co-occurring population in Hillsborough County, FL. 


  Pre-requisite Requirements:

  • High School/GED and three years of direct service experience in a substance abuse or mental health treatment or recovery setting. OR

  • Personal recovery experience will be considered on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required experience.

  • Certified Peer Support Specialist Certification preferred.

  • Must possess valid Florida driver's license, industry accepted driving history and maintain vehicle insurance required by State of Florida. If required to drive an ACTS' vehicle, must maintain driver's license and history as listed above and participate in all transportation-related activities, including on-the-road driving test relative to appropriate and safe operation of motor vehicles.

  • Must possess competencies specific to the service/s provided.  Competencies may include life experience, training, certification, education or other background in the service area.

  • All ACTS, Inc. employees must be able and willing to work when expected to accommodate program and/or agency needs, participate in the agency's Quality Improvement Program and attend all assigned/required trainings, practice on-the-job safety at all times, and demonstrate the ability to communicate and work with others and be respectful of peers, supervisors, clients, guests, etc. If required by contract or administrative rule, must fully participate in NAPPI (crisis intervention) training and able to apply same to work setting.

Scope of Responsibilities: Conduct psycho-educational groups, promote consumer empowerment, assist with admission and consumer access to entitlements and other resources.

Supervision:  Work is performed under the supervision of a Program Administrator, Director or Supervisor and/ or Project Director. This position does not provide supervision to others.

Core Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Carries out all duties in accordance with program policies, procedures and established time frames. 
  • Assist program participants with execution of service plan goals. 
  • Provide peer-to-peer mentoring utilizing motivational interviewing and other identified interventions.
  • Identify service/referral system barriers affecting program participants for discussion on program, community, and state level.
  • Utilize tools such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) to assist clients in creating their own individual wellness and recovery plans.
  • Advocate for program participants during staffings.
  • Completes all required forms, reports and other documentation within the required time frame. 
  • Attends monthly staff meetings and supervision sessions. 
  • Participates in team meetings with Therapist, Case Manager or Project Director. 
  • May transport program participants, as needed.  Remains with clients throughout daily activities as needed.
  • Work locations may include community and/or jail settings.
  • Maintain fidelity of all program interventions.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with community partners.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of VA service continuum and VA benefits eligibility/enrollment. 
  • Attends all required/assigned training both within and outside the agency. 
  • Participates in the Agency's Quality Improvement Program as assigned. 
  • Practices safety on-the-job at all times.
